Crofton Village Garden Club's Thank You to Vets

Garden Club WorkshopOn this Veteran's Day, there are many ways that people all over the country are reaching out to say "thank you" to veterans.  The Crofton Village Garden Club uses flowers.

Instead of having a speaker at the November meeting, we hold a workshop to create red, white and blue flower arrangements for wounded veterans who are recuperating at the Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation and Extended Care Center nearby in Baltimore.

120 arrangements were created by club members, this year, and delivered to in-patients at the Center, which also provides medical treatment and rehabilitation on an out-patient basis.

There is a lot of "heart" in this project, since many garden club members are spouses or widows of military personnel who fought for our country during World War II, Korea or Vietnam.  Others have children who have served or currently serve in the military.

It is just a small gesture of thanks, but the young recipients were very pleased to receive them.

Thank you to Sally Moore for the photo.  Click here for more information about this project.

Margaret- What a wonderful gesture of appreciation for our vets! It is not small at all, but grand on the thought that counts scale! Katerina

Margaret, what a great idea!  I was very disappointed in church today when they did not even mention the veterans....in the past they've been asked to stand, but nothing today.  Veterans Day Ribbon

Colleen, thanks for commenting!.  This isn't one of my "best" posts, but I think it's a nice thing to do and worth a mention on Localism.  I'm waiting for photos taken at the hospital, and will add them.

Katerina, it really is quite a show when you have 120 of these arrangements lined up on a table!  One of the ladies who delivered them said that another person was going around at the same time, putting a hand-made afghan on every bed.  Imagine that!

Margaret, wow what a great event. I'm sure all the residents enjoy creating with flowers.

Mary, thank you for commenting.  You must have slipped that in while I was busy acknowledging Katerina and Colleen.

That is a shame.  Do you think it was an oversight or a political statement about today's war that disrespected ALL veterans?

Missy, it is a great event.  I'm sure we enjoyed it as much as the young men who received the flowers - although the ladies who delivered them said some of the young men were very touched and others had a smile that reminded them of their kids on Christmas morning.

Margaret, wonderful post, and wonderful photo as well!  Beautiful flowers say so much!

Margaret:  This is so nice.  I'm sure the people making the flowers had a great time.  What a wonderful idea to have a workshop to create something rather than a guest speaker.  Also, I see you have been quite the busy blogger so I am off to read all the others you've written.  I quickly glanced at the one with the Christmas ribbon about listing your home in December.  That one looks fantastic.  Also, I used to sing and actually still do, You are My Sunshine to my son and now my grandkids!

Donna - Way to go!  When we stop worrying about points, we can wrap all our comments into one and move on!  I like it.  And thank you for the kind words.

Patricia - I guess things can get pretty depressing around there, as these young guys hear the politicians and see how people feel about a cause they sacrificed so much for.  I'm betting a lot of them feel like the Vietnam vets did when they returned, in spite of the "we support the troops" rhetoric.  This was a tangible reminder that people DO care about them.

Judy - Thanks for commenting.  We have done this for the past several years, and it is always a huge hit with the guys.  The administrators contacted us this year and asked that we please bring one for every inpatient.  Our delivery ladies ran into some outpatients in the hallway, and they asked for them, so I guess we'll be making more next year.
