Little-Known Facts about Ledo's

 Ledo's Map

Crofton loves Ledo's at Eddie's Place, that's for sure!

Several months ago, I held a pizza contest on another website and invited people to post a comment about their favorite place for pizza in Crofton.  Ledo's won, hands down over Dominoe's, Pizza Hut, and Papa John's.  Louise Lear was the lucky winner of a drawing for pizza at her favorite pizza restaurant or carryout, and she just happened to be a Ledo's fan.

Many of us have enjoyed a long love affair with Ledo's, having fond memories of our late-night visits to the original restaurant in Adelphi, near The University of Maryland.

Even if you have enjoyed Ledo Pizza for several years, though, you may not know these interesting facts:

* Ledo's slogan, "We're square because we don't cut corners!" comes from the use of rectangular pans, which were more readily available and less expensive than round ones when Ledo Pizza opened in 1955.  Customers seemed to like their rectangular pizza, so Ledo's still serves them even though round pizzas are the norm for most pizza restaurants and carry-outs!

Ledo's Pizza* Fresh handmade pizza dough is hand-rolled when you order your pizza - not tossed, like most pizza dough.  Ledo's pizza dough is made fresh every two hours, and never frozen.

* Thick slices of locally-made pepperoni are another trademark of Ledo Pizza.  Cooks cut the pepperoni slices by hand in the beginning, so slices were thicker than machine-cut pepperoni.  Again, customers really loved their pepperoni pizzas at Ledo's, so you can still get them just the way they were served in the 50's at the original family restaurant.

* Smoked provolone cheese is used on Ledo Pizza, rather than mozzarella.  That's why there is a saltiness to it, enhancing the flavor of pizza at Ledo's and making it unique.

* The Marcos family, one of the founding families of Ledo Pizza, still owns and manages the original restaurant in Adelphi, Maryland.

* Ledo's Pizza System, under Bob Beall (grandson of the other founder of the restaurant), now owns the Ledo brand and franchise rights and, since 1989, Ledo Pizza has spread to Washington, D.C., Delaware, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and, of course, throughout Maryland.

* In November 2006, Oprah Winfrey featured Ledo Pizza on her show as one of the best pizzas in America.  Her friend, Gayle King, attended the University of Maryland during the 70's, and never forgot her Ledo's Pizza at the original restaurant.

A lot of people in Crofton feel the same way.  The voting in my pizza contest proved it!

Frederick loves Ledo's too.  We have two of them here.  I just love the way the pepperoni cups the grease...ahhh I feel my arteries closing up now...well worth it.

(I think your Ledos is across from my Region hq)

Margaret,

What we call pizza in the US is not true Italian pizza...this looks much more realistic...Would you be kind enough to e-mail me a piece!!! LOL, Thanks,   Frn

Why does pizza look yummy...even in the morning???

Kelly - I could eat pizza 7 days a week, and I wouldn't rule it out for breakfast.  However, when I do it for breakfast, it's usually a pizza bagel at The Bagel Place in College Park, across from the Book Exchange.

Fran - I don't know what true Italian pizza is like, but I know I like this!

Bob - I've been to Ledo's in Hagerstown, but not Frederick.  Yeah, those pepperoni pizza's are a little greasy for me, although I like pepperoni on pizza from other places.

Aziz - I don't know where the Ledo's is in Annapolis - I'll have to find it!

It's a small world Margaret,

Ledos is my all time favorite pizza and the original place (where they put a cherry in all their sodas) is still my favorite place to eat it.  Something about the place makes it taste better than in any other Ledo's Restaurant.

My sister in law (married to my brother) is Tommy Marcos' neice.  Mrs Marcos is my sister in law's mother's sister. They all live in Old Bowie. LOL

Oh BTW,

We have 2 in Silver Spring - One in Colesville 20904 and one in Wheaton 20902.  None of them match the place in Adelphi though.

Margaret:

I should not have stopped by the blog before dinner!  Now, I have to have pizza for dinner!

Margaret-We have a new Ledo's pizza in Lorton now.  It just opened last week so I am going to have to stop and check it out.  My favorite pizza when I was a child was a square meatball pizza from the small local pizzeria.  We usually only had it when my parents were going out.  Mmmmm pizza.  Now I'm hungry...darn :-)

Hi, Margaret! We have a Ledo's Pizza nearby in Norcross - I had no idea it is a chain! It's fabulous, though!

Debbie - I don't know about you, but I was glad when I was able to enjoy a Ledo's nearby, and not have to go to Adelphi!  I can't help wondering what they thought of this post when it popped up in a google alert.  You'll have to ask, since you have a connection with a Marcos family insider.

Thesa - Did you have to bring that up?

Caryn - Yes, I understand... that happens to me sometimes, too.  'Hopefully Ledo's will find their way to your neighborhood, and you'll already know all the inside scoop about the place!

Cindy - Did you ever have Ledo's before?  It's different from pizza anywhere else.  In fact, my husband doesn't like it, and he always gets one of their famous steak and cheese subs (new to the menu, since they started franchising) - but that suits me fine because I get ALL the pizza!

Maura - Yes, it's a franchise now but, like many others, it all started with a single restaurant in a strip center near a University.  As UMD alum spread out across the state and the east coast, Ledo's had built-in fans, wherever they opened.  I will say, though, that there don't seem to be tight controls on the franchise restaurants when it comes to dining environment - it's not like a Chili's or a McDonald's where one looks like another.  Each place has its own personality (or lack thereof) , even if the pizza is the same.  Our local Ledo's just underwent a renovation that makes it a really pleasant place to dine.

Margaret- How fun it that! What a fun contest that must have been for you! A great way to connect with folks living in Crofton. Katerina

Hi, Katerina - Yes, it was a GREAT way to get people to go to my blog!  I was somewhat amazed at people who voted.  I listed all the pizza places I knew of in my blog, and told them to vote in the comments.  I would hold a drawing on a specific date, and buy the winner of the drawing a large pizza at their own favorite pizza place, whether or not it was the winner.  If I had my new outside blog up and running, I probably would have made signs or fliers for all the different pizza places for them to encourage their customers to vote for them.  Lots of possibilities here....

Margaret,
That picture of the pizza is sure making me hungry for a nice big pepperoni pizza!  Great idea getting the restaurants involved.  Mind if I use your idea??

Sorry it took me so long to acknowledge your comments, but here I am... finally!

David and Kristin - Thanks for your comment, and sure... the more you feature local businesses, the better.
