Remind Me Again... Why Did I Volunteer for This?

After 18 straight hours at the computer, laying out the format and outline for my garden club yearbook, all I can say is "What was I thinking?  Why did I volunteer for this?"  Yes, I've had since March, when I first "volunteered", and there's no excuse for starting this project two weeks before it has to be distributed at the first meeting of the year.  I suspect there are many more long days and nights ahead of me this week.  (If you don't see much blogging from me this week, you'll know why.)

What's the point of this blog post, you may ask...  Well, somehow I don't think I'm the only one around here who has a tough time saying "NO" when asked to take on a task.  It's too late for me, but let this serve as a reminder to ask yourself "Why?" BEFORE you volunteer to be a room-mom for your child's class this year, or any other activity.

If you have a good answer to "Why?" - go for it!  Right now, I'm not sure I do...  But I can finish this major project.  I think I can, I think I can, I WILL!

Hi Margaret-Having devoted many years to leadership in the industry, a couple years back I came to that same point and said enough is enough. I went back to being a nobody and haven't looked back. Much anyways, lol. We do those things we do because we can and just so you know, when St Peter calls and you tell him you the Garden Year Book, won't he be impressed? :-) Smile, that is supposed to make you smile,!

LOL.  Yes, William, I went through that anonymous stage a number many years, after being somewhat of a neighborhood activist.  I just recently came out of it...  and I think I'll be returning very very soon.  Right now, it's time to call it a day... 'long day ahead showing property from one end of the county to the other.

Morning Margaret,

I feel your pain, I think that's how the saying goes.  But I truly do. Been there, done that and I continue to take on task that should have been left for someone else. But, when all is said and done, the good feelings prevail. You will accomplish the task and be glad you did.

The best commitment to yourself is to start sooner when you take on the next task, and you will. That's the way we are. That's who we are.

HI Margaret - I too volunteered for a huge project. In June, I created the graduation DVD for all the 6th graders from my daughter's school. The photos went back to kindergarden up to 6th grade. Most of them I had to scan, format, then edit the slide and video show, music . . . (oh btw - I had to make sure they all went back to the families). I was at my computer for hours! I can relate, but it is a good thing and people will remember you! I know my daughter was happy and the other parents were too!

Our organizations could not function without volunteers.  Think of all the garden club, or school, or church, or political committee, or real estate association has given you over the years and know it is noble and good to give back.  Plus, you never know who among those gardeners will need to sell their house this year!
