Located on Crofton Parkway in the heart of "Old" Crofton at the top of Crawford Boulevard, you'll see the Crofton Village Green as you enter this community.
In Crofton's early days it was the scene of the Spring and Fall Craft Fairs and the annual Christmas Tree Lighting, but both events outgrew the Green as the community expanded far beyond the original triangle bounded by Routes 3, 424, and 450.
You can still catch a free summer concert at the Village Green, however, and residents frequent the many businesses ranging from Sly Horse Tavern to a variety of professional offices.
The lamps you see in the photo were gas lights when the community was built, but they were converted to electricity in the 80's. Each year during the holiday season, they're decorated with wreathes by the Crofton Village Garden Club.
Crofton truly is a beautiful community year round - mainly because of the wonderful people who live here and bring these photos to life.

Morning Margaret,
Nice to read and remember in some cases, about the days gone by. I so enjoy the history of places where we live and lived. Thanks for sharing.
I don't know why I thought it didn't snow much in Maryland. Hey, at least I know where the Mason Dixon line is. :)
LOL @Elizabeth :-)
I remember one year while we were living in Rockville when the snow and ice was especially heavy. Crofton sounds like such a pretty town but I don't think we made it over there when we lived in the area. Crofton is located off the highway that goes over to Annapolis, I think, and Annapolis was a must see for us.
looks like a nice look back at history good place to raise a family.
Hi Margaret, you always have such great posts of your area and community...makes it feel like home no matter where you are from. Nice post.
Nice job on this one Margaret and congrats on yet another featured post. If I ever get anyone calling me about your area you are the one I am going to send them to. AND ONCE AGAIN WELCOME TO L&F!!!
Margaret...I can hardly wait to come for a visit! Don't know when that next road trip is to NYC, but you can bet we will be stopping in Crofton to see the one and only!
Great post. I have relatives in Hagerstown. Maryland is really beautiful.
Love the photo editing work! We're slated to come down your way in April, by the way...
Thank you ALL for your comments! This is #3 in a series of photos I hope to include in one master post after there are a few more.
Jeff - Too bad you can't make it Tuesday night for the party at Patricia Kennedy's. Are you coming for NAR mid-year meetings?
Kari - Hagerstown is a beautiul place... about 5-10 degrees cooler, since it's north about 90 minutes.
Michael - Thanks for the warm welcome. The transition has been much easier than I could have imagined.
Gary - That's one of the things people love about this community.
Terry - I think newcomers like to know a little background about a community when they move in and make it their home.
Shirley - Crofton is about 5 minutes north of Route 50, off Route 3. Route 50 is the road you probably took from the Beltway to Annapolis.
Elizabeth - Some years we get a lot of snow, and some years none at all. I'll never forget the year when my husband was deployed (Navy), and the 3 kids had snow days all but 3 days in February. So far, none this year (this photo was taken in 2008).
Hal - Thank you, I hope Crofton home buyers find this and feel the same way you do.
Margaret - Crofton looks and sounds like a charming area. The former gaslamps are a neat feature and remind me of a few areas in boston. COngratulations on your Localism feature.
Jeff
Thats a great picture the way it was used with that background. Strong localism posts I always feel will have a strong benefit to attract business.
Wonderful post on Crofton, Maryland! I also love the photo! Great job.
Margaret: You did a beautiful job on localisming (don't even know if that is a word; but I will use it anyway) your town of Crofton, Maryland. I have never been to the state but if I was going I would love to tour the town! Take care!
Jeff - Thank you! Actually, when we moved to Crofton, the front lights on all the homes were gas-lit, as well. Most of those were either turned off or converted to electricity in the 80's. And the same is true of the street lights on Crawford Boulevard, the treed curving road between the highway and Crofton's main street.
Morgan - A closeup of the wreathe on this post was actually used on the cover of the Garden Club's program for December's holiday house tour. The sky could not have been more blue - and it was not edited in any way.
JB - 'Glad you like it, and I hope you'll check out the other photos in the series.
Teresa - Thank you, I hope relocating home buyers feel that way!
Ok, so I want to know how to do the photo thing on an angle with a background...I am so lame with the set up, but want to be more creative...
Pat - My "secret" is www.Picnik.com. It's free, but the upgrade is very cheap and gives you some extras, such as the font I used at the bottom of the picture. Another program, also free, for creating photos on a slant is www.lunapic.com - you'll find the photo option under "effects".
What a great series to write about your town. I like the picture tilted; it justs adds a little "something".
Margaret it always shines through that you have a passion for your area. Great job with this article on Crofton.
Awesome post, Margaret. This is truly what Localism was meant for. This is a good reminder that I should be doing the same thing...
Margaret - what a nicely done Localism post. The layout is eye-catching, and I love the interesting facts about the street lamps. Congrats on the feature!
What a quaint photo. I've heard nothing but great things about Maryland from a friend who's just moved from there to Florida. I'll have to try to visit and get my snow fix
Margaret - Congratulations on your feature and this wonderful post - I really liked what you did with your Focus on Crofton web site - absolutely fantastic!
Thanks folks, I'm trying to post a photo and brief info once a week to Localism - for Crofton, so far, but other nearby communities in the future as well. Right now I have more Crofton, Davidsonville, Odenton and Gambrills photos, but I'll be taking more of Bowie and Fort Meade when the grass turns green.
No, we have a new April tradition to go down to DC for the Cherry Blossoms but may go early this year to make room for a missions trip in April.
Margaret - congrats on the feature, and great information about the history of Crofton.
Margaret,
I stopped by to say Congratulations on the little gold star!
